1. What is FTP?
FTP is File Transfer Protocol, an internet protocol used to transfer materials over the Internet. It is very fast, very efficient, and very reliable.

2. What does "24/7 FTP Access" mean?
This means that you have access to your site via FTP over the Internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can "upload" files to your site - in other words, transfer files from your computer to the UP webserver on the Internet - and you can also "download" files from your site - in other words, transfer files from your site on the UP webserver, to your computer.

3. What is the first step in setting up a website?
The first step is to gain FTP access to your site, and upload the initial file to the proper directory. This initial file must be named index.html, and it is the web page that will be returned when you call up www.yourdomain.co.nz
[-Back To The Top-]

4. How do I gain FTP access to my site?
First, get an FTP program from the Internet. Try WS_FTP LE: http://www.ipswitch.com/
You will need to go to the Download Evaluations area and check the WS_FTP LE box to download this free version of the software. After it's installed, run the program. In the panel that comes up (Session Properties), enter a name - call it anything you want - eg yourdomain. Then in Host Name/Address, put: yourdomain.co.nz. (Obviously if the extension is NOT .co.nz - if it's .com or .edu or whatever, you would use the appropriate extension) or the IP number we send in your welcome letter. In User ID, put your User ID - this is username we send in the welcome letter - and then in Password, carefully type your password - I say carefully because it will be masked, so you won't be able to read it - this password is CASE SENSITIVE!
You can optionally check the Save Pwd box if you want WS_FTP LE to remember your password and automatically enter it every time you use the program. This will probably depend on how secure your computer is.
Now click OK in the lower left of the panel, and if all goes well, the program will establish an FTP connection with your site and take you to the main directory. Double click the www subdirectory to open it. This is the right place to put your index.html file.

5. How do I "upload" and "download" files using WS_FTP?
WS_FTP is VERY easy to use, and has a very intuitive, easy to use interface. The left panel is YOUR COMPUTER - the right panel is THE REMOTE SITE - in this instance, your UP site. Simply locate the files you want to transfer in the left panel, highlight them and then click the transfer arrow between the two panels. You can also tranfer to your computer from your website in the same way, using the other arrow. Easy!

6. Where do I put the index.html file?
When WS_FTP opens the site yourdomain.co.nz, it initally goes to the Top level directory - you need to click on www to open the correct directory. This is the place to put index.html/ Make sure you do NOT put the file into any of the other folders you see there. You can also put all your pictures and other files for you site in this same directory, creating or copying subdirectories here as you need to as well.

7. What does "updating the site" mean?
Basically what a webmaster does is download files from a website, operate on them and/or change them with an HTML editor such as Arachnophilia or a plain text editor, and then upload the changed file back to the site.

8. What is HTML, and what is an HTML editor?
HTML is HyperText Markup Language - it is essentially a kind of typesetting language, and is used to create images on the web. Our recommended editor - for creating and manipulating these images - is Arachnophilia. It is freeware and can be downloaded at: www.arachnoid.com Read the Help file, practice a while, and you'll pick it up in no time.

9. How do I set up email accounts with my domain?
One account is automatically set up when the domain is set up - username@yourdomain.co.nz However, you are entitled to additional POP3 email boxes free of charge. You simply go to your control panel (at the address we provide in your welcome letter) and use the facility for creating new email accounts and managing existing accounts. Each email box has its own password, so you can setup as many users as you have available mail accounts.

10. What about Email Autoresponders?
Email autoresponders are very useful in Internet commerce. Essentially, an autoresponder is a robot which resides on your site, and does one thing - when it receives an email - from anywhere - with its name on it - it sends its text back to the source of that email. Uses for these little robots are limited only by your imagination.

11. How do I set up an Email Autoresponder?
The control panel makes it a breeze. You just open up the Mail Manager and select the email account you wish to add the responser to and it will open a text box for you to type your message.

12. What is an email redirect account?
These "aliases" are simply lines of code in your HOME directory which "bounce" emails from one email address to another. Let's say you have a webpage and you want people to email you, but you don't want your personal email address to appear on the page. Solution? Use a forwarding email account. Emails sent to Mary@yourdomain.co.nz (the address shown on the webpage) will automatically be forwarded to mary@personal.co.nz
[-Back To The Top-]

13. How do I set up email redirect accounts?
This is similar to setting up Autoresponders. You simply open the Mail Manager from the control panel, select the email account you wish to redirect and there will be a dialogue box to enter the address you wish to redirect to.

14. My account is pretty big, can I subhost or "park" other domains?
Our accounts are big because we want to give you plenty of room to expand. Some of our clients have more than one web site which they host on their account. Essentially each web site resides in its own subdirectory (within the main www directory). The usual way to address each of these sites is like www.yourdomain.co.nz/site1/ and www.yourdomain.co.nz/site2/ etc. You can "park" as many domain names as you wish on your site, but to get each domain name pointing at a separate is pretty tricky. Anyone who is familiar with how a Unix .htaccess file works will probably be able to do it, but anyone else is likely to find it too difficult, so the simplest way is to make the index.html a gateway page which provides access to the other subdirectories through HTML links.

15. How about email for other domains parked on my website?
Every time a new domain name is parked on your site all the facilities will work in exactly the same way - ie email sent to you@yourdomain.co.nz would go to the same mailbox as you@yourotherdomain.co.nz. This can be very useful if you run several websites, but only want one mailbox, or if you ever want to operate with a new domain name. If you want separate email boxes for different domains all you need do is setup a new email account with a different name.

16. What is a domain name?
A domain name is the name of your site (ours is up.co.nz) and is also called a URL (uniform resource locator). A domain name is a bit like a business' trading name and must be registered with an appropriate domain registration agency (in New zealand this is either www.domainz.net.nz or www.freeparking.co.nz). The domain name is setup on special web servers called nameservers (there must be two separate nameservers to make certain the name is available even if one server is having problems) and these nameservers point the name at an IP (internet protocol) address - like 208.56.98.174. You can access a website by either its domain name or its IP number. A site can only have one IP address, but more than one domain name can be pointed at the same IP number.

17. How do I get a domain name?
It's very easy - you just apply for one. In New Zealand try www.domainz.net.nz or www.freeparking.co.nz
[-Back To The Top-]

18. Will you do the domain name registration for me?
Yes! Simply fill in the relevant details on our order form and we will arrange a domain name registration or transfer. Note that for the New Zealand .nz extension several rules apply. Make sure you read the rules and regulations before applying, available from the www.domainz.net.nz site.

19. What about reselling?
You may resell space in your domain. Of course there are several ways to approach it. One is simply to sell directories in your space - www.yourdomain.co.nz/client1 and then www.yourdomain.co.nz/client2 and so on. But - if you want to make some SERIOUS money, check out our reselling business opportunity - it's brand new and it is INCREDIBLE! Details? Take a look at this (click here).

20. Do you allow "adult" sites?
No, we do not host adult sites. Try searching for adult web hosting at www.searchnz.co.nz.

21. How do I get access to traffic statistics for my site?
Very easily - simply access site statistics from your control panel. You'll find detailed reports in various formats on your traffic, including where hits are coming from, at what hours of the day, month, etc. Also you'll be able to tell which files are being requested. Essential for fine tuning your web marketing strategy!

22. Does UP really offer unlimited hits?
For the vast majority of domains, traffic never becomes an issue and yes, within reason, you should never worry about the number of hits your site receives, but as a practical matter, no provider can provide you with unlimited resources for a fixed price. Bandwidth costs money, and unlimited amounts of it are not available to anyone. Therefore, we set a limit of 10 gigabytes of transfer per month on your domain - anything over this we bill at $40/gigabyte. We reserve the right to shut down any site without notice that is in arrears on payments for overage on traffic, or where excessive traffic is causing serious problems for other hosted clients on the same server.

23. What is UP's policy on "spam," or unsolicited email?
The sending of unsolicited commercial email, or "spam," is strictly prohibited. We have a "zero tolerance" policy on spam, and reserve the right immediately to terminate without warning any domain, without refund, that sends out unsolicited commercial email, in any amount.

24. What about Microsoft Frontpage?
UP's servers support the Microsoft Frontpage HTML Editor and Publisher by allowing you to install Frontpage extensions in the control panel. However, we do not provide technical support for Frontpage - it is simply provided as an additional utility for those already familiar with this program and who wish to continue using it.

25. Hey I just checked out my new site - and the utility I just installed does not work!!
Most utilities which can be installed from the control panel (hit counter, search engine, shopping cart, etc.) take at least 10 minutes to install, so make sure you have waited this long before seeking support.

26. Do you have an 'uptime' guarantee?
Well, nothing is certain in life and there are lots of things that can happen on the internet to block access to a site, but we do our best to keep our servers up and running 99.5% of the time. The other .5% is usually for very brief periods of maintenance and wherever possible we provide advance notice.

27. Can you help me with my HTML, webpage, CGI programming, etc?
Time permitting we give advice via email on these issues but remember, we are providers of webspace and can help you with 'content' only as time permits.

28. How do I change my domain over to UP from my old hosting company?
Just complete the relevant details on the order form and we do the rest.

29. Can I change a password to my email account, main account, or a subdirectory?
Yes, you can do this yourself easily. Be aware, however, if you change your password, we will not be able to go in and fix some problem on your site without your telling us the new password - OR - we may have to go in and change your password ourselves. There is a handy password utility in your control panel.

30. Where are you located?
UP is a wholly New Zealand owned IT business. We maintain our servers at a secure facility in the USA professionally monitored 24/7.

31. Do you offer tech assistance by telephone?
We find that email is far more efficient; Email to support@up.co.nz will be MUCH faster!

32. Do you have any job vacancies?
No, not at present, but if you are an independent designer seeking contracted work we may be able to use your services from time to time. Simply email us your details and urls of example sites you have designed.

33. I don't want to learn HTML or design a web site - can you design it for me?
Yes! We offer highly competitive design services. Click on the Design tab above for more details.

  34. I can't get my CGI script to work. HELP!!
Here are some tips on CGI:

*Scripts must be made executable with chmod 755 filename

*Perl is located at /usr/bin/perl, make sure the first line has this right.

*Perl scripts will REFUSE to run if uploaded in binary from a non-unix computer. Make sure you upload scripts in ascii mode only!!!

If you are going to use perl, buy a Perl book.

35. Do your packages run ASP (active server protocol) scripts?
No. We are setup for SSI (server side includes and have php, perl and python scripting available, but you will need to find a more expensive NT hosting service to be able to run your ASP script.
