The nzmp3 website was designed as a repository for independent kiwi music, so lends itself well to a database enabled site. We created a MySQL database to hold artist and mp3 information and then serve it up directly from the database using PHP scripting. PHP is ideal for this as it interfaces well with MySQL and is a very fast and flexible programming option.
The opening page features a Flash movie with a sound byte from one of the site owner's mp3s. The grayscale concept works well and small amounts of spot colour really stand out.
This site also incorporates a membership function where artists can join up and then manage their own content. Because there is potential for many gigabytes of mp3 data to be stored the hosting solution is modular, so that additional hosting space can be added as required. A 5GB account was used to ensure plenty of space for the initial 200+ mp3s.

The Soul Shoes website features extensive use of Flash technology to provide more exciting visual impact to support these wonderful shoes. The use of natural materials in shoe production is mirrored in the use of more natural colours and images of Raglan where the Soul Shoes factory is located.
The site features an online shop which needs to display prices in different currencies. We have created a link to capture and utilise BNZ exchange rates to ensure that prices are always accurate in these other currencies. For the catalogue pages we used PHP to be able to include scripting and interfacing with a Paypal account for online credit card processing.
The occasional need to update prices is easily handled at minimal cost to the client.

Well-known folk singer/songwriter Chris Thompson wanted a basic site to promote his music and advertise touring dates and other gigs. This relatively simple site is the result. The index page image was created from a photograph using Photoshop magic and the resultant very basic black/orange/white colour scheme was used throughout the site.
Chris has subsequently taken the site offline, but it provides a good example of a simple information only website which requires very little upkeep. A redesign every three to four years would help keep the content fresh and up to date.

The Marathon Tours project was undertaken to provide a web presence for a small business operation aimed at providing information for runners and arranging tours to compete in some of the world's best marathons and half marathons.
For this site we used XSSI (eXtensible Server Side Includes) technology to render the pages. XSSI is great at managing template information (like headers and footers) and when combined with CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) ensures a consisent look and feel. It also makes it easier to maintain the site by holding the page content in plain text files which are readily modified without risk of damaging the underlying structure and design.

The Art of Learning is a training company specialising in developing study, learning and resilience skills in secondary school students. They operate in New Zealand and the United Kingdom and wanted a web presence to provide information about their programmes and offer follow up information and support for participating students, their parents and teachers.
The site is built using Flash technology, with breakout html pages for specific detail and resources. The design brief was to ensure visitors understood the global nature of the company, with possible expansions into Canada and Asia accommodated. There is ongoing development of support docuemntation and other resources, so the ongoing hosting costs reflect monthly maintenance and occasion re-tweaking of the design.

This site was created to display a jewellery catalogue. The catalogue subsequently changed and the owner asked that the site be removed while they reconsidered their online presence.
This represents effective use of Flash animations combined with html and the use of JavaScript to control layers (as seen on the catalogue page). A lot of work went into optimising the photographs to ensure a reasonably fast download time while maintaining a dynamic, interactive website.
